Being Spiritual Vs Being Religious

Recently I was going through the one of the person's profile in one of the community sites and I was struck by the word "Spiritual but not religious" in the religion column. I was pretty amazed by that and thinking how the person becomes religious and what makes him to pray to different gods eventhough the soul is only one. I was busy searching for answers and got some interesting facts abt that which i thought i would like to share.
Spirituality is, in a narrow sense, a concern with matters of the spirit. The spiritual, concerning as it does eternal verities regarding Man's ultimate nature, is often contrasted with the temporal or the worldly. The central defining characteristic of spirituality is a sense of connection to a much greater whole which includes an emotional experience of religious awe and reverence. As with some forms of religion, the emphasis of spirituality is often on personal experience. It may be an expression for life perceived as higher, more complex or more integrated with one's worldview, as contrasted with the merely sensual.
An important distinction needs to be made between spirituality in religion and spirituality as opposed to religion.
In recent years, spirituality in religion often carries connotations of the believer's faith being more personal, less dogmatic, more open to new ideas and myriad influences, and more pluralistic than the faiths of established religions. It also can connote the nature of a believer's personal relationship or "connection" with their god or belief system, as opposed to the general relationship with the Deity understood to be shared by all members of that faith.
Those who speak of spirituality as opposed to religion generally believe that there are many "spiritual paths" and that there is no objective truth about which is the best path to follow. Rather, adherents of this definition of the term emphasize the importance of finding one's own path to whatever-god-there-is, rather than following what others say works. The best way to describe this view is: the path which makes the most sense is the correct one (for oneself). Many adherents of orthodox religions who consider spirituality to be an aspect of their religious experience are more likely to contrast spirituality with secular "worldliness" than with the ritual expression of their religion.
Others of a more New Age disposition hold that spirituality is not religion, per se, but the active and vital connection to a force, spirit, or sense of the deep self. As cultural historian and yogi William Irwin Thompson put it, "Religion is not identical with spirituality; rather religion is the form spirituality takes in civilization." (1981, 31)

How to remember a list in order...

The Number/Rhyme technique is a very simple way of remembering lists in order.
It is an example of a peg system using - a system where information is 'pegged' to a known sequence (here the numbers one to ten) to create pegwords. By doing this you ensure that you do not forget any facts, as gaps in information are immediately obvious. It also makes remembering images easier as you always know part of the mnemonic images.
At a simple level you can use it to remember things such as a list of English Kings or American Presidents in their precise order. At a more advanced level it can be used, for example, to code lists of experiments to be recalled in a science exam. The technique works by helping you to build up pictures in your mind, in which you represent numbers by things that rhyme with the number. You can then link these pictures to images of the things to be remembered.
The usual rhyming scheme is:
Bun
Shoe
Tree
Paw
Hive
Bricks
Heaven
Gate
Line
Hen
If you find that these images do not attract you or stick in your mind, then change them for something more meaningful. Link these images to ones representing the things to be remembered. Often, the sillier the compound image, the more effectively you will remember it Continued in comments....

Jokes for the day!!!.Continued...

Porch
A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighbourhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs forher to do. "Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?"
The blonde said "How about 50 dollars?" The man agreed and told her that thepaint and other materials that she might need were in the garage.
The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does she realize that the porch goes all the wayaround the house?" The man replied, "She should, she was standing on it." A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
"You're finished already?" he asked. "Yes," the blonde answered,"and had paint left over, so I gave it two coats." Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the $50.
"And by the way," the blonde added, "it's not a Porch, It's a Ferrari."

Jokes for the day!!!.

A Scottsman, a Chinaman, a Pom and an Aussie were in the pub debating whose country was the best.
The Scottsman reckoned his was the best, because we got the greenest grass.
The Pom reckoned his was the best because they had the most beautiful flag.
The Chinaman reckoned his was the best because of their Great Wall.
The Aussie said we're the best, 'cos we got the kangaroo, and that can jump over your great wall, crap on your grass and wipe it's ass with your flag!

Mozilla Firefox Vs IE...

Recent studies conducted by Netherlands based onestat.com has found that the Mozilla firefox is gainin popularity over the Microsoft based Internet explorer. Eventhough the % composition currently is 20:80 the fact is that in a month's time the % declined is 6%. So check out you might also start using mozilla firefox in the forthcoming years...
I was wondering why all of a sudden Internet explorer got tabs to visit different sites like Mozilla. may be this could be the reason. Survival of the fittest.. Anyways Microsoft is a biggie company so they definitely start working on the flaws available in their system and try to rectify the same. If that cannot be done then they definitely buy it.. wat say??

Women more likely to stalk and attack their partners!!!

A new study has found that while women still remain the major victims of abuse, an increasing number of the so-called “weaker sex” is more likely than men to stalk, attack and psychologically abuse their partners. The study, by a team of researchers led by Angela Gover, a University of Florida criminologist, surveyed 2,500 students at UF and the University of South Carolina between August and December 2005. They found that in the 29% of people who physically assaulted their dates, 32% of women reported being the perpetrators of violence, as compared to 24% of men. Angela Gover said that the statistics showed a change in how women in relationships act. “We’re seeing women in relationships acting differently nowadays than we have in the past. The nature of criminality has been changing for females, and this change is reflected in intimate relationships as well,” she said. Another survey of 1,490 University of Florida students, found while 25% said they had been stalked during the past year, and 7% reported engaging in stalking, 58% of whom were female. However, the facts remain women made up the largest number of victims in both surveys, accounting for 70% of those being stalked. Today’s women are more likely to understand they have options instead of putting up with any kind of abuse could be another reason why women were turning violent. “Maybe some of these women have been abused by their partner for some time and they’re finally fighting back,” she said. “I think we may also be seeing sort of a new dynamic in dating relationships in terms of women feeling more empowered. They recognise they don’t have to be in a dating relationship forever,” she added. The researchers found child abuse was the single biggest determining factor for men and women becoming perpetrators or victims of dating violence or stalking. Even if one never personally experienced abuse, witnessing violence between one’s parents increased the likelihood of stalking or being stalked as a young adult and it made girls more susceptible to becoming victims of dating violence when they grew up.

What propels you to plant a bomb!!!

Last week, there was violence in Mumbai. bomb blasts - seven of them! This Monday, the Naxalites in Chhattisgarh had struck again in the Dantewada belt. Israel is raining fire on Lebanon - My God! The list is endless. Death is becoming the most easily available commodity in today's world. The precious human life is becoming cheaper and cheaper each day. Nobody is ready to listen to the other. It is not that suddenly the violence has erupted out of nowhere. Since the time immemorial, life has always been a struggle and that has happened primarily because we have listened to the call of our instincts. In case of people, who have tried to stand up against these traits, such men have become immortal - be it a Buddha or a Jesus or anybody else.

Nostradamus : World war III predictions revealed!!! - Book watch

Imagine knowing the secrets Nostradamus never intended humanity to decipher.

In May 2004, members of the Italian National Library in Rome made an amazing discovery. Buried in their archives was an unknown manuscript written by the famed prophet Michel de Notradame, or Nostradamus (1503-1566). This manuscript was handed down to his son and later donated to Pope Urban VIII. It did not surface again until now, almost four hundred years later.
Due to the pressure and scrutiny of the Inquisition, Nostradamus was forced to scramble both the meaning and the order of his quatrains. He made sure humanity would not be able to use them until we had become sophisticated enough to decode them. That time has finally arrived.
Using cutting-edge data mining techniques, Dr. Michael Rathford sifted this complex word puzzle searching for significant patterns and relationships. Almost immediately, he came up with the predictive model known as The Nostradamus Code.
When the prophecies-within-prophecies are deciphered, the timeline of World War III is revealed. You will read about Osama Bin Laden, the next major terrorist attack on the US, a confrontation between the US and Iran/North Korea, and great detail on the timing and course of World War III.

Twenty Twenty World Cup.....

After much contemplation, deliberation and initial non-compliance, India has agreed to play the Twenty20 World Cup next year. Sure, it would not have been a financial success without India in the fray, but is that the only reason India has agreed to be part of this event? For one, India has not played many matches of this version and has no real base to create a team from. At the outset, it does seem like a pocket version of the one-day game, but closer only scrutiny shall reveal the real requirements. So from the current crop, who will be fit enough (technically, mentally, skill-wise) to fit in the Indian team for a Twenty20 game?

Sachin Tendulkar is a name that springs to mind. He can bat (well, yeah!), bowl a bit, field well. Check!

M S Dhoni is another name that seems a certainty. He can bat with some rather imposing results; well suited to this format and he also solves the problem of a ‘keeper. Double check!

Mohd. Kaif is a certainty more for his fielding and energy than batting. But he can bat too. And after the series he had in the West Indies, this is perhaps the only playing XI he will be making it to.

Yuvraj Singh is another certainty. He can bat, bowl and is an exceptional fielder. Perhaps there also may be a case of trying him out as captain in the version… a litmus test of sorts for bigger things to come.

Virender Sehwag is someone who may feel this game is tailored for his approach. And if he and Dhoni are sent to open, who knows what score may show up after 20 overs!

Harbhajan Singh may be a good bowler, but his style of bowling may just be marauded. To be honest, that’s the plan for any style of bowling, but spin will suffer more! Still, he would be a handy fellow to have in the XI.These guys apart, one does feel that Rahul Dravid, Wasim Jaffer and some of the more ‘technically sound’ players may not make the cut. And although Dravid himself has advocated a place for this version on the domestic stage, he may not stay in the team beyond a few token games. But coming back to the original question as to why the Indian board did a volte-face on this issue and suddenly decided to align with the interests of the ICC (International Cricket Council) on the Twenty20 game, the only reason that comes to mind is money. So in an already packed international calendar, don’t be surprised to find a few of Twenty20 games tucked away somewhere. And one hopes this does not become the norm for playing at neutral venues, much like ODIs currently are. This format, however, will be a huge success with television audiences since the games would almost always be played to suit primetime viewing (watch out saas-bahu soaps!) and the ad revenues that are generated could just skyrocket. But in all this, aren’t we forgetting something? What happens to the real deal? Test Cricket. With already eroding techniques and temperaments thanks to ODIs, the quality of Test Cricket has suffered. Sure there are more results and result-oriented play, but at the cost of technique and planning. And with a second World Cup in place already (Twenty20 and the ODI), what significance does the current ranking system of the ICC hold? Every two years, the top-ranked team is handed the Test Championship trophy but unfortunately, this is not a spectacle since the result is often a foregone conclusion. So perhaps there is also reason to re-look at the ICC’s Future Tours programme. Maybe there is scope to spin off a 10-12 team World Test League mixing players from various countries for a 2-year period and then having a Test Match World Cup (of countries) at multiple venues over 4 or 6 months. Both events, mind you, would not be connected. At least then, it would be an event. Otherwise, it won’t be too long before the viewer can no longer bear the “long-drawn” 5-day affair and decides to give it a miss. The point is to give all these Tests and ODIs a purpose. More than just Twenty20 Cricket, perhaps there is also need for Twenty20 vision from local boards and more importantly, the ICC.

A controversial survey on India!!!!

India has been judged the sixth most dangerous country for children — even more dangerous than Afghanistan, the Palestinian Territories, Myanmar, and Chechnya!

A Letter from Mumbai...

Dear Terrorist,
Even if you are not reading this we don't care. Time and again you tried to disturb us and disrupt our life - killing innocent civilians by planting bombs in trains, buses and cars. You have tried hard to bring death and destruction, cause panic and fear and create communal disharmony but everytime you were disgustingly unsuccessful. Do you know how we passour life in Mumbai? How much it takes for us to earn that single rupee? If you wanted to give us a shock then we are sorry to say that you failed miserably in your ulterior motives. Better look elsewere, not here. We are not Hindus and Muslims or Gujaratis and Marathis or Punjabis and Bengaliies. Nor do we distinguish ourselves as owners or workers, govt. employees or private employees. WE ARE MUMBAIKERS (Bombay-ites, if you like). We will not allow you to disrupt our life like this. On the last few occassions when you struck (including the 7 deadly blasts in a single day killing over 250 people and injuring 500+ in 1993), we went to work next day in full strength. This time we cleared everything within a few hours and were back to normal - the vendors placing their next order, businessmen finalizing the next deals and the office workers rushing to catch the next train. (Yes the same train you targetted) Fathom this: Within 3 hours of the blasts, long queues of blood donating volunteers were seen outside various hospital, where most of the injured were admitted. By 12 midnight, the hospital had to issue a notification that blood banks were full and they didn't require any more blood. The next day, attendance at schools and office was close to 100%, trains & buses were packed to the brim, the crowds were back. The city has simply dusted itself off and moved one - perhaps with greater vigour. We are Mumbaikers and we live like brothers in times like this. So, do not dare to threaten us with your crackers. The spirit of Mumbai is very strong and can not be harmed. Please forward this to others. U never know, by chance it may come to hands of a terrorist in Afghanistan, Pakistan or Iraq and he can then read this message which is specially meant for him!!! With Love,From the people of Mumbai (Bombay)

Importance of dying as a man

Recently, we read that the 57-year-old chief of Flextronics Software, Arun Kumar, passed away while on a trip to America. There were shock waves all around. People could pay tributes to him at online web sites. There were a quite a few people, who knew about him and his work, who paid rich tributes to that man. This event made me remember one line that our Hon. President, Dr. Abdul Kalam had once said: “How do you want the World to remember you, when you are not there any more?” In the Mahabharata, Vyaasa talks of an event, when all the five Pandavas, while in exile and wandering in the forest, were passing through a certain place which was haunted by a spirit. They were all thirsty and one by one, from Sahadev onwards, whoever drank water from the lake without answering the spirit’s queries, fainted. Till, at last, Yudhishthira himself came in search of water and found all his four brothers lying on the ground. Not realising what had happened to them, he also stepped in to the lake and he heard the spirit’s voice which dared him to drink the water before answering his questions. He was a patient man. So he started answering the questions. There were almost 127 questions that he asked and which Yudhishthira had answered beautifully, all compiled under the category called – Yaksh Prashna. In one of the questions, the spirit asks – what is the greatest surprise in this world? “That in this mortal world, every human being behaves as if he is immortal and will never die,” said Yudhishthira. This is probably the essence of all spiritualism. In its absence, I’m totally defenceless. I cannot defend and justify my actions. In such a situation, whatever responses are triggered, they almost symbolise the essence of that personality. Continued in comments......
